Design and Technology

Design and Technology is the subject that gives young people the skills and abilities to engage positively with the designed and made world around them.

INTENT

Design and technology at Forest Academy develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials including food. Our aim is to provide the children with a breadth of memorable experiences that inspire children to be creative and encourages them to think about important issues including recyclable materials and the impact this has on our world.   By the time our children leave us, they will be well equipped with the skills and the knowledge to research, design, make and evaluate their work and have a greater understanding of how D&T makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the world.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Forest Academy, our D&T curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides children with an array of enriching opportunities which allows for children to explore the designed and made world in which we all live and work. D&T is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject and combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real life problems. D&T links to and helps teach other subjects including Maths, English, Science, computing and art, as well as other compulsory subjects on the curriculum, in an enjoyable manner and puts these subjects into context making important connections. In lessons, children develop a research, design, make and evaluation process. The children are encouraged to become inventors and risk-takers and to take pride in their work.

IMPACT

Our Design and Technology curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and we use a range of strategies to assess what skills and knowledge the children have attained each term including the following:

  • Pupil voice
  • Book looks
  • Regular feedback each lesson
  • Monitoring planning
