INTENT
Computing at Forest Academy is designed to broaden children’s horizons and prepare them for an ever-changing digital world. Our curriculum equips pupils with the skills, knowledge and confidence to use technology purposefully, creatively and safely. We want children to become responsible digital citizens who can navigate online spaces, including those involving artificial intelligence, with an informed awareness of risk and respect for others.
Our curriculum nurtures curiosity, problem-solving, resilience and teamwork through memorable, hands-on experiences. By the time pupils leave Forest Academy, they will be confident users of a range of age-appropriate devices and software. They will understand how technology is used in everyday life and will be able to explore the digital world independently while knowing how to protect themselves and others online.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our computing curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enhanced through the Purple Mash scheme of work and the use of Google Classroom in Upper Key Stage 2. Pupils learn through a planned progression of skills, building year on year in digital literacy, computer science and information technology.
Children experience a balance of plugged and unplugged activities using age-appropriate technology, such as iPads, Chromebooks, desktop computers, Bee-Bots and other programmable devices, enabling them to apply their knowledge in different contexts.
Online safety is taught explicitly every term and is embedded across all lessons. Children learn how to recognise risks, respond to online content, communicate respectfully, manage their digital footprint, and understand how AI tools work and how to use them responsibly. We also utilise immersive experiences such as Now Press Play and work with community partners to enrich programming and real-world technology links.
IMPACT
We measure the impact of our curriculum through progress in digital skills, confidence and digital citizenship. Assessment strategies include:
-
Work samples and portfolios saved on Purple Mash and Google Workspace
-
Pupil voice discussions
-
Ongoing teacher feedback and self-assessment
-
Observations and evidence recorded on Seesaw
By the end of their Forest Academy journey, pupils will be safe, confident, creative and responsible digital learners who are ready for the next stage of their education and for life in an increasingly digital world.
