Mathematics at Forest Academy

 

Our Mathematical Intent:

 

At Forest Academy our Mathematics Curriculum intent follows the direct aims of the National Curriculum striving to ensure children:

 

* become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

 

* reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

 

* can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

 

At Forest Academy, we intend to provide our pupils with a high quality, coherent Mathematics education that equips them with key mathematical skills and conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. We intend to provide a progressive Mathematics curriculum which develops the children’s ability to communicate their mathematical reasoning, ignites their curiosity, and supports them to become critical thinkers.

 

We believe in promoting a sustained and deepening understanding of mathematical concepts by using a Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach, as well as ensuring our pupils are able to communicate, justify, argue, prove and reason using mathematical vocabulary to support this.

 

Calculations Policy

 

Our Calculations Policy, developed from both the National Curriculum itself and the non-statutory Mathematics Guidance for Key Stage One and Two, underpins our mathematical teaching providing a consistent approach to the teaching of methods and strategies and highlights the core manipulatives which are used throughout the School.
