Science

To have a passion for Science is to have a passion for the world around us.

INTENT

Science at Forest Academy aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically and develop an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future. Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. This allows children to build upon their prior knowledge and increases their enthusiasm for the topics.

All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations, as well as being encouraged to question the world around them and become independent learners in exploring possible answers for their scientific based questions.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Forest Academy we use the PLAN documents that have been produced by the Association of Primary Science. These provide teachers with age appropriate (National Curriculum) lesson objectives and vocabulary, as well as suggested activities. Teachers use these to plan weekly inspiring and investigative lessons. Each half term children are given a knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge, vocabulary and information about a scientist. Children can and do refer to these when needed during a lesson, they also take a copy home to share with their parents.

Throughout the year we have visits from experts who will enhance the learning experience of our children. We have had RAF STEM experts in to talk to children about how science is part of their job. We also held a science week where every class chose and planned experiments and discovered a range of scientists.

IMPACT

Our Science Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Book looks
  • Pupil voice
  • Regular feedback each lesson
